An Excerpt from my book: Lupus And Me: Living Well With An Autoimmune Illness: Healthy Nutrition (Volume 1) by Jenn Schoch Link: amzn/1490306471 Oh No, Not Another Diet! So, you are ready to start getting healthier? I know that personally, I tend to go all out on something new, and then decide I cannot continue it. This is not a diet—it is a lifestyle, and will require some getting used to, so be easy on yourself! I recommend that you start with trying to eat clean for one meal a day—and see how you feel after 1 week! One week is doable for anything, right? Not only will it decrease your joint pain, reduce strain on the kidneys, spleen and other organs, it will also lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack. Another added benefit is it will also support weight loss, which many autoimmune sufferers write to me about, as a consequence of steroid side effects. We tell ourselves that we cannot eat healthy because “it costs too much.” This is simply not true…Using a crockpot and a few fresh veggies along with fresh meat can provide several meals, is tastier, and much more fulfilling, and far cheaper than a frozen dinner! I know with lupus and other chronic illnesses, fatigue is a big part of life. So, the idea of cooking something makes us go, “no way is that happening.” I highly recommend a crockpot—it is very easy to whip up tasty meals that are easy on the budget, with little effort. It is also important to note that everyone has their own view of what they consider eating clean. Some people will be stricter than others depending on their goals (which is fine). You need to find out what works for you and your body. As long as you are making healthier choices for you and your family - you are moving in the right direction. Eating clean can be a major transition for a majority of people due to addictions to sugar, white bread, and fast food. It takes discipline in order to make eating clean a habit but it is possible and has so many long-term health benefits. Another point I would like to share is that you should NOT EXPECT PERFECTION! Youll never have a perfect diet or a perfect body. I am still learning more about clean eating...it was overwhelming at first, but, over time, you will figure out the approach that best fits your budget and time constraints... ©Jenn Schoch, RN, MSN, FNP-BC
