An NIAID-funded study shows that early transplantation of blood-forming stem cells is a highly effective treatment for infants with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a group of rare, life-threatening immune system disorders. Affected infants who receive transplants at a very young age and babies of any age without infection at the time of transplant have high survival rates, regardless of the type of stem cell donor used. The results highlight the importance of detecting and treating SCID early in life.
