An Older Women’s Adventure into Metal Land I bet some of you - TopicsExpress

An Older Women’s Adventure into Metal Land I bet some of you are wondering why someone of my age is interested in the metal scene in Spokane. I’ve noticed the weird looks and laughs as I started going to shows. Even few band members being rude. But ya know just as any other type of stereotype, it is not cool. This is what I want to do and I love it. So stop making assumption, bad looks/comments about me, let’s concentrate on the work ahead, and promote the local rock/metal scene. Now that I vented let me introduce myself to you; I recently retired from working in the mental health field for 35 yrs and now have the time to do some of the things I have always wanted to do. I have always loved metal but never got a chance to be involved. I started by being on the Street Team for Nixon Rodeo. It was so much fun and I was really interested in learning all about how this industry worked. Thanks to Brent and Ethan for taking the time to teach me the basics. Brent showed me how songs develop and are written. Ethan showed me the business side and how CD’s are recorded etc. At this time one of my ideas came as a suggestion to him. I thought that the fans probably don’t know how much work goes into it and he should show them. Later he made a video explaining what the process is. After that I became part of Helldorado’s Street Tea m. Here I learned how they promote and get sponsors. It’s amazing how hard bands work; they practice all the time, have to get to shows with very little money, at times borrow equipment if theirs fail or break, all in all it was a fun learning experience. I also began to understand is not all friendly between bands. While all this was going on there were some issues at The Knitting Factory, as you remember there was a shooting at the parking lots across the street. The Chief of Police saw fit to close the Knit down. It was time to do something about it and I joined Allie Swan and others, though the Facebook group ”Keeping the Knitting Factory Open”. We thought The Knitting Factory was being punished unfairly, so we advocated for the re opening. Within 2 days we had 3,000 supporters, pressure was put on the Mayor and the City Council to reopen the Knit. Our page was even mentioned in the press. Well, it worked. They reopened the Knit much to our delight. We received a note from the Mayor and the Knits Grand PooBa thanking us. Not that our page did this single handled but we helped. After that Allie went to pursue other opportunities and she left the page in my hands. For a year I have used that page to promote diff events, bands and venues. Sometimes letting bands know of opportunities or posting when a band is looking for another member. My only addendum is to help our metal scene in Spokane, and this is how I met Aaron Torres. I was beginning to think the Knit page needed an overhaul and a new name; after all It’s been a long time since the close down of the Knit failed thanks to your support. One day a friend (Kara –she and her boyfriend Eric may I add are huge supporters of the metal scene) at a show introduced me to Aaron who was doing the same as I had but with photos, reviews and videos of the shows. After getting to know each other and found our goals were similar we decided to merge our pages. Now we are trying new things to help the page grow. Aaron goes to most of the shows even though he works full time and I go when I can. In case you wonder why? My husband was in a bad motorcycle accident 2 yrs ago and has a spinal cord injury. This prevents me from going to as many shows as Aaron. So here is the introduction to my adventure. I plan to write off and on about my experiences and would like to thank the venues and the bands for being open minded that even an old gal can be into metal and want to help, we are here to promote the Spokane’s Local Rock/Metal scene, we really hope this adventure takes us far, not as in famous but as in actually spark up the Rock/Metal scene, I am not going to lie but it’s a bit sad to experienced how while most bands are great at helping each other there are some that will do things to hurt another bands just to get ahead, the so called Cut throat, let’s hope this ends and we all begin working together, together we can spark it up, apart we won’t get nowhere.
