An Open Letter to Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios: The good - TopicsExpress

An Open Letter to Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios: The good news: Since the big reveal, Agents of SHIELD has really been cooking with gas. All the puzzle pieces and character arcs are falling into place. Bravo! The bad news: Canada is a country. Obvious? Not so much if you watched the last couple of episodes. Okay, SHIELD is supra-national by treaty, they can cross national borders at will. Got it. Fine. But the U.S. Army? There wasnt even a 10 second fig-leaf to acknowledge that, oh yeah, this story is taking place in a friendly foreign country where the US ARMY HAS NO LEGAL AUTHORITY TO DO ANYTHING. No Canadian soldiers, no mention of Canadian permission for the operation, not even an outraged Youre on Canadian soil. You have no authority here! from Coulson. And you know he would have said something like that. This is not a fannish quibble, this is a big deal. I mean, why bother setting the story in Canada at all if youre just going to ignore the fictional consequences of that choice? You risk alienating your foreign viewers otherwise, and we all know how important the foreign market is for TV and movies these days. Its profoundly irritating to watch your country reduced to a big blank abstraction, to nothing but a back yard in the words of (the extremely annoying) Major Talbot, who in particular was completely and irrationally oblivious to the fact that he was on foreign territory Thats all. Thank you for listening.
