An Urgent Message to my Friends, Family, and even complete - TopicsExpress

An Urgent Message to my Friends, Family, and even complete strangers: Just in 5 years or so, my mother, a former co-worker, a current co-worker, two close friends, and now (just this week) an extended family member (who has been like a sister my whole life) have all been diagnosed or battled breast cancer. Pink is all other the place this time of year, but I hope that the real reason it is so contagious and in our face is because we all need to be aware how pervasive breast cancer has become the last several years. In reality, buying or wearing pink really only benefits the people who own the pink-clothing factories. Put your time and money into encouraging your friends and family to get tested regularly and to directly support those women in your life through their struggle. That is what all this awareness should be doing... And if you are a blood relative of mine reading this - you HAVE to get checked. It is in our family and you know it. My mother and great-grandmother (moms fathers mother, Mamie) both had heavy cases of it and walked away after long battles. (Mamie lived to be 99!) So, early detection and plan-of-attack is what awareness is. My close friend/godsister that was just diagnosed this week had hers caught SUPER early through - you guessed it - simple testing. Not by wearing pink or avoiding the doctors office. So, please, please get checked regularly. And fellas, YES, as my mom reminded me the other night at a breast cancer benefit, we often neglect to even realize - YES, MEN can get breast cancer too. (actor Steve McQueen died of breast cancer). So, this awareness means more than just a pink fashion statement. Get tested. At least once a year. Do it. No excuses. I love you all. Period.
