An anonymous parent writes: Im not even sure what my question is. Maybe I just need reassurance. We homeschool and always have. But my sons father (were divorced) insists on having the public school do an IEP, despite the multiple assessments we paid for privately prior to the divorce. We still plan to homeschool, and if they have resources we can use, thats fine, too. Im worried that the school testers will come up with different conclusions than the many private practitioners, and then what? Do I have to agree with their conclusions and do what they say? My son is 13 and is very happy homeschooling. Weve been able to work on his 2e issues. Its just that so many people who dont know him say we should do this or do that for the behaviors that they see, but they dont seem to realize how much work goes into making my son look high functioning. Without the support I give him, he wouldnt look like he was doing so well, and hed feel terrible about what he sees as his mistakes. Im afraid hell be seen for his disabilities and theyll just skip right over his strengths, especially since our state doesnt even look at giftedness in their IEPs. Anyway, thanks for listening. I just want my son to be OK.
