An article! Composed by Mr. Phuc and corrected by a friend of mine, an M.Phil holder. Hope that you will enjoy it! Contrary to the popular belief expressed in the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, people in my country, Vietnam, have shown and witnessed a significant shift from a reserved to a more westernized way of life as their dressing tastes have changed. In my grandparents’ times, it was Ao Dai, Vietnam’s traditional dress, that held its appeal and importance to them all. Both males and females wore this costume whenever they were out for business, such as at village meetings, at weddings, funerals and all other important events. For one thing, it was held to be an image of dignity, which was considered the most critical characteristic of a man. Similarly, girls or women were also expected to wear this type of clothing because, with its full-covering design from the neck down to the knees and long sleeves, it made them look reserved; and it is common knowledge that being reserved was typical of ladies in their generation. However, this once-popular fashion has now been superseded by imports from other cultures. Unlike in the old days, people, especially men, now go out in suits, which are seen as more convenient. This kind of clothing was introduced to my country with the arrival of the French, but in recent years it has increased in popularity. Together with the introduction of this, people’s way of thinking has also altered significantly. They have become more tolerant of other cultures and behavior, and of ways of life which were viewed as unacceptable in previous societies, such as cohabitation. In fact, mens female counterparts dont lag behind; they are even a step further ahead of the men. What this means is that now they tend to go for the clothes which are most revealing. To sum up, over the course of less than fifty years, my society has seen great changes, and the most influential one is that of fashion, which in addition has had a huge impact on people’s other perceptions. Both changes carry with them good and bad aspects, but in my view it is all part of an inevitable process of social development. Therefore my country should give them a warm welcome.
