An article about the dangerous impact of the wild boar hunters written by a member of the Belgian Nature Rescue Center (or Natuurhulpcentrum. Located in Opglabbeek, Limburg, Belgium) dating from 29-04-2013. natuurhulpcentrum.be/index.php/news/988/58/Everzwijnen-en-klopjachten ------------------------------------------------- Translation: Once again hunters are disturbing the peace during the important spring season. Once again hunters got permission to roam the forests and rural areas of Maaseik (City in the north-east of Belgium) in large numbers. After last week, when 160 people went trough the forest while screaming, using horns and hitting trees to push the wild boars into the hunters, this useless display was repeated once more. Its unbelievable the government keeps on giving permission to do this. All wild animals are being frightened and fleeing from all major regions, while especially during springtime rest is very important to nature. Birds are looking for a nest or are already hatching. Many wild mammals already have their young or are ready to give birth. And right in this period all possible resources are being used to disturb this. Its scandalous and especially when none of this is gaining any result. Furthermore, in two recent hunts not a single boar was caught. Last week we already filed our complaints to the Agency of Nature and Forests (or Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos) at minister of environment Schauvlieges address. We wonder ourselves if these policymakers lost their minds or if these services are being occupied by hunters. Hunters want to make this overpopulation of wild boars grow. They act like they are doing their best, but claim not to be successful. Thats why they ask not only to hunt all year long but also at night and to hunt in areas where no hunting is allowed. If this will be allowed they will have no limits anymore. In contrary to the hunters, forest rangers of the Agency of Nature and Forests caught 14 boars in only a few hours. Once again this proves hunters are not willing to solve anything. We plead once more not to give permission to hunters to organize chases in this time of the year. The huge disturbance of many rare animals makes these displays absolutely unacceptable. Hunters should definitely not be granted access to nature parks or state forests. If there is any problem involving wild boars anyway, forest rangers can be deployed. Obviously the hunters are not going to like to hear this and they will do anything they can to make the politicians forbid the forest rangers from solving problems themselves. Its unbelievable a minister of environment cares so little about nature! ------------------------------------------------- Personal note: Most complaints are being made by farmers, who lose a bit of their crops now and then. Wild boars are known to be useful an have a positive influence on nature by tossing dirt around with their snouts, loosening up the soil which is beneficial for plant life. They also eat certain types of harmful insect larvae and get rid of mice.
