An article (in Finnish) about Finnish immigrants to the US in todays Helsingin Sanomat contains some interesting old photographs. The 1st picture is a group of Ostrobothnian Finns in Minnesota from 1910. Currently, there are approximately 700,000 people who have stated their background to be partly Finnish, in the US. Their ancestors are the 300,000 Finns, who boarded ships to cross the Atlantic a hundred years ago. Immigration from Finland to the US started in the 1880s, and continued until the 1st World War. Most Finns settled in Minnesota and Michigan to work in the saw mills and mines. Actor Matt Damon is one of the few celebrities with a Finnish background. Today, there are an estimated 23,000 Finnish immigrants born in Finland, living in the US.
