An excellent article from my close friend Nimmu Vasanth w/o Vasanth cinematograper.. “Are Women Safe in India?” – I hang my head in shame.. What I witnessed from Dundee and Land of Dates and Deserts...Marvellous !.......July 20th 2014, pretty chilly night at Dundee, Scotland. The plan was I stayed with ladies, Debbie and Sherine and Vasanth stayed with male members at studio apartments. For that night’s dinner, I made chicken curry for all and we all enjoyed with lot of discussion about various lifestyles. We went to the respective rooms. It was almost 11.30 p.m. Debbie instantly hit upon the idea...” Aunty, we do shopping in the nights to save time. TESCO mall is open for 24 hours. It is absolutely safe. The laws are so strict, we all carry police call number. They instantly arrive at the spot. Also the wrong doer gets the toughest punishment. Even the drunkards, do not misbehave.”....hey great ! We three ventured out without letting the men know of the plan. Beautiful streets, eeries silence.. one old couple in the TESCO mall, two ladies running across Tay River Walk for exercise with one man. Two ladies having loud arguments and laughter with a drug addict...these are all the people we witnessed in that cold midningt hour. When we heard the loud noise looked like arguments piercing the silent air, initially, I thought something was in danger. Later we saw them all laugh and moved on leaving behind the lone drugged guy.. We understood they are friends.....On our way back, we happend to be in Dubai then to Al Ain, a couple of hours drive . The weather was extremely hot. During that Ramzan fasting days, braving that scorching heat no creature was out except us. Thanks to Aruna and Benita to make this happen. They drove us out everywhere possible to pluck sweet dates and enjoy desert views. Benita too told that Dubai is absolutely safe for ladies and she would go out to coffee shop or eateries amidst hectic study schedule in the night. Sheeba and Shiju also told the same who lovingly hosted us in Sharjah. Sheeba, a poet activist for women absolutely endorsed “men of this land of dates and deserts have lot of respect for women. If they see women in the night, they don’t make a fuss and carry on casually with their work. The dresscode of jeans and t-shirt is not of importance to them. Only we people think differently. We in India need to change a lot in our attitudes,”....... I was simply dumbstruck and mentally saluted the men. Here I recall what Mahatma Gandhiji said “Real freedom is when woman walks safely at midnight”..Let’s make it possible in India too !!!.
