An excerpt from my novel, The Jackal. Currently being written and edited. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Jack Lynes is dead. They announced that seven years ago and the same is true today.” Senior Detective Todd Nelson had been on the force nineteen long years. Actually, it was nineteen years, seven months, and twelve days. He had too much work to get the hours and minutes down. In that time, he had seen and heard of just about everything. He had heard of dogs murdering their owners’ wives, drivers fleeing police because their brakes were cut, and the classic line, “The aliens made me do it,” but this was unbelievable. Mason nodded as if he agreed, but his statement gave a different story. Todd was pacing back and forth on the plain white tile in the plain white room. He was never the sitting type. There was a single table in the middle with just two chairs facing each other. In the center, there was a pitcher of water and two empty glasses. Nobody was thirsty. Behind Todd, two officers watched from behind the two-way mirror in case things got out of hand. It was standard procedure, but totally unneeded for Mason. Todd had handled much tougher men in his day and had them down on the ground if they attacked him before anyone from outside could get into the room. Even at his age now, he believed he could take any punk that ended up in that chair. This was not the room Todd had envisioned though. He felt that white was the color of peace and made the criminals he interrogated feel at ease. He wanted a room that dripped with fear. His room would show the person what their future would be like. He wished Mason Arnold were in his dream room. He would be sitting on a stainless steel toilet in a cell barely large enough to hold him. With no windows, he’d be forced to look through the bars at his interrogator while the two officers held their fully loaded guns in his face. No peaceful setting to hide what Todd and the rest of the police are like. They are not your friends when you are a criminal. They aren’t going to help you out of a jam. That’s what lawyers are for and Todd hated them too. A guy like Mason would probably shit himself if he were in that cell right now and he’d be in the right spot for it. Mason would come clean in a room like that, but Todd knew he’d do just the same in this one. Mason wasn’t much of a talker, but he was a smart guy. Most criminals were dumb enough to lie and lie even after they had pushed themselves into a corner. If Todd could make Mason see that his lies made no sense, he’d confess and both of them could leave the eggshell room. Hopefully, shit free. One would return to his duty and the other would get a glimpse of his future from his jail cell. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed that, head on over to my author page on Amazon and check out what Im currently offering.
