An excerpt from our Active Moms Blog: They are just breasts!.....Sooooooo much hype out there about breastfeeding! Theyre just boobs, people! Theyre a collection of mammary glands intended for the nourishment of your child. Between reports of long term nursing, not nursing enough, moms nursing in uniform, blah, blah, blah.... Opponents and proponents of breastfeeding taking to heated debates of the merits of breastfeeding in each of these circumstances- me included. Im not saying that its bad to talk about it. The fact is that the conversation is welcomed in order to highlight the beauty of the act of breastfeeding. The sad thing is that somehow or another breastfeeding becomes maligned, villified. It is depicted as perverse, disrespectful. It is the controversial hot-bed topic of today- much like immunizations was the controversial topic du jour a few years ago. Again, theyre just boobs!!! I kind of laugh. I picture people in the past talking about breastfeeding and what would they say? I wonder if Mary and Joseph had a discussion about whether or not to wean Jesus on his first birthday. Did Moses mom (mind you, adoptive, due to circumstances) ever blink at the thought she had to nurse another baby- not her own- along with her own suckling? Wait, she was wealthy! Both boys were probably fed by a wet-nurse. Was there controversial talk over the milk sharing? LOL! These were the practices that were handed from one generation to the next without even batting an eyelash. Thats what breasts are for, and its what you did to feed your kid! So whats the big deal now? Why, all of a sudden, is breastfeeding the means to crucify women so readily? Not mom enough? Feeding too long? Disrespecting the uniform? Again, blah, blah, blah.... I also think of the renaissance painters. What would DaVinci, Michealangelo, et al. have painted without breastfeeding? These men depicted the epitome of motherhood as the nursing mom. Those paintings are still revered as masterful works or art to date! Nobody turns those painting over in the museum as people were doing with the magazine covers on the newsstand rack. Breastfeeding inspired a movement of art based on motherhood. What an homage to what breasts truly mean! Theyre just breasts! They are the prettiest milk containers, but theyre not disrespectful or rude! Theyre not obscene. Theyre not a controversial topic! Theyre the method of feeding human babies since time began. Theyre the best way to feed your baby. Theyre the best immunity for your baby. Thats it!
