An exhibition at Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach focuses on the beginning of the First World War and literature. “Never before in history was so much written as in August 1914, nothing (other than love) seems to make writing as necessary as does war,” the organizers write. The exhibition on the occasion of the outbreak of the First World War 100 years ago renders the enthusiasm for war, the fears and the uncertainty very palpable, in the form of jottings by Franz Kafka, Hermann Hesse, Rainer Maria Rilke and others. “August 1914. Literature and War” runs thru 30 March 2014.
