An extraordinary day in Amboseli .. a family of elephants walking across the plans near the swamp get very agitated at the sight of a young bull, he stands there to meet them. The matriarch shields her baby, while her other young son reaches out playfully to the young bull. The peaceful greeting is broken by the screeching trumpeting of a young female - she is spoiling for a fight with a herd of buffalo. Everyone scampers of except one bull buffalo who stands his ground, they stare at each other for at least a minute, elephant backs down! She marches off after her family who have left the young bull. He moves towards her, she falters, does a sideways walk circles him, he reaches out with trunk as she turns her body and presents him with her rear. He checks her out and now facing the direction she came from, she starts walking forward while constantly checking him out over her shoulder - the classic hard to get girl. He follows enthusiastically, but something on the ground catches her attention. She momentarily forgets him as she picks up a white object, its a the tip of a tusk. She mouths it, places it under her own tusk, feels it carefully with the two fingers at the tip of her trunk, she rolls it around in her trunk lifts it high as if she is trying to look at it, ... the young bull is momentarily forgotten. He waits patiently for her to finish her ceremony with the tusk. After a few minutes she lowers her trunk and lays the tusk back on the ground then walks on still heading away from her family. She looks to the bull who again follows and her game of catch me if you can resumed. Extraordinary moments always happen when I have special guests in Amboseli. I must do much more of this! Feeling so lucky to live in such a land of greatness.
