An extremely well-written essay on the state of strong female protagonists, shared with a sigh by my friend / cousin / niece CB Smith-Dahl. I have to share also this brilliant comment by my friend / cousin / nephew Ian Smithdahl: Lego Movie, Kung Fu Panda and the Matrix all involve a highly capable, badass woman, portrayed as uptight who believes that she is destined to fulfill an important prophecy. Along comes a totally unqualified bumbling idiot who actually does fulfill the prophecy, and the poor lady has to train, mentor and accept the idiot. Optionally, the prophecy is maybe a hoax (Lego Movie, Kung Fu Panda), which makes the marginalization of the badass woman even more frustrating. Optionally, the badass woman falls in love with the idiot (Lego Movie, the Matrix). But, all of it is to say, Women: work hard, train and prepare to fulfill your destiny if you wish, but some totally incompetent man is going to come and do your job for you. Sigh, indeed.
