An important update on the status of our ongoing negotiations with DirecTV: TWO WEEKS AND COUNTING. KOMU made its most recent offer on April 25th. DirecTV HAS YET TO PROVIDE A COUNTEROFFER. YOU SHOULD KNOW: We are sitting at the negotiating table, but DirecTV refuses to join us. It’s inexcusable that DirecTV is prolonging this unnecessary outage, using their customers and our viewers as pawns to get what it wants. These are the same threatening tactics DirecTV has used in negotiations with broadcasters across the country in an effort to get its way. We remain committed to reaching a compromise that can bring about a fair agreement. We know that we owe it to our viewers. To be clear, there are some key issues that divide us. The biggest issue is DirecTV’s demand for the digital rights to KOMU 8’s programming. Those rights have yet to be granted to us by NBC or any syndicated program provider. No NBC affiliate in the country has those rights, and DirecTV is well aware of that fact. To explain further, “digital rights” are the right to distribute KOMU 8’s signal over the Internet to mobile phones, tablet devices and computers. We understand this is an emerging model, but there are still many legal questions to be answered. It is infuriating that DirecTV continues to hold its customers hostage over this demand. The second issue is whether DirecTV is willing to pay a fair, market-based rate for the right to resell KOMU 8’s signal for its profit. DirecTV continues to mislead its customers with statements that KOMU 8 is demanding rates that would increase your bill. To be fair, we are seeking an increase on a rate that was negotiated more than five years ago. But we can assure you that this rate is well within the market and industry standard and is consistent with the terms successfully negotiated with every other provider serving Mid-Missouri. Please contact DirecTV and let them know this is important to you. Call DirecTV at (800) 531-5000 or go to DirecTV or facebook/directv.
