An interesting article from 1985: Illiteracy Fight Is Everyones War The Morning Call | October 23, 1985 There is a beauty, a spellbinding attraction, in the written word and what clusters of those words can depict and conjure. It is tragic that an estimated one-third of the population of the richest nation on Earth cannot comprehend any of that beauty. They are the nearly 70 million illiterate Americans, persons so deprived of basic reading skills that they cannot read virtually anything in this newspaper. They are the ghetto children bounced from grade to grade in depressing inner-city schools; youngsters who merely ride the crest of the education wave without being immersed in actual learning. ------------------- Why is this still a problem some 29 years later? You can help make a difference by becoming a volunteer tutor with the Literacy Council of Frederick County. Next tutor training is April 5th and 12th in Hagerstown.
