An interesting article on employee burnout and work overload. A friend of mine has pointed out that after all the statements about overload, the section What managers need to do says nothing at all about reducing the overload and pushing back, just ways to react to it. It is almost suggest that this is sacrosanct, and we all have no ability to do anything about it. Im not sure I agree entirely. There are probably lots of things that can be done to help people cope with burnout. The research Ive been doing into The Future of Work, as well as that Im conducting in my work on The New Social Learning, more than hints at many of them. However, from a managerial standpoint - at least in terms of my experience dealing with managers - almost all of the points refer to building greater communications, authenticity, and trust within the organization. I would have considered that a worthy goal to strive for and an even more admirable feat had I ever seen anyone really accomplish it in the years I was in the corporate world.
