An interesting experiment in film from Richard - TopicsExpress

An interesting experiment in film from Richard Linklater: Having set out to create a film that accurately depicts the progression of boyhood into manhood and the ups and downs of parenting, Richard Linklater began by casting a boy at the age of 7 (Ellar Coltrane) having him return in annual intervals to continue acting in scenes as he grew over a period of life until he reached age 18 and the film was completed (12 total years in the making). Linklater’s daughter also acts annually in the film (though she eventually grew bored with it, and asked to be killed off, but because the movie is a coming-of-age drama, it probably wouldn’t have worked, so he convinced her otherwise and she agreed to continue). It’s an interesting approach, and one that has never been done before (as far as I know), there have been documentaries that involved the filmmakers returning to interview the subject’s from time-to-time throughout their life, but the approach has never been applied to scripted film. It looks interesting, and Linklater has a great track record (Dazed and Confused, Slacker, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly). And because it required some serious commitment from all involved, here’s hoping it does well. Also stars Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke (an actor Richard Linklater regularly casts) ‘Boyhood’: https://youtube/watch?v=d0HZKk_0BE4
