An interesting speech by Clive Palmer in the House of Representatives yesterday. Recommending a Parliamentary Committee to provide advice on an Australia Fund to be established to provide rapid assistance in times of disaster, rather than waiting for bureaucratic wheels to turn. A good point. He also stated The fact remains that the Australian government is the number one petitioner of bankruptcies and company liquidations in this country, and the number one destroyer of jobs and enterprises. If business could continue to trade and jobs not lost, the government and the taxpayer would be the winner. We know the ATO has a lot to do with this... and they can make whatever decisions they want to ... and yes, you can appeal... but at what cost... and then what? You have no real redress on recouping your spent dollars. I think there should be two Parliamentary Committee one as suggested by the Honorable Member, Clive Palmer, and one to take an honest look at the ATO and the way in which it functions. In 2012, when the numbers of corporate liquidations reached an all time high (frequently precipitated by govt departments) I called for a Senate Enquiry to be established on these matters ... I call again... a voice in the wilderness... for the ATO to become accountable in an appropriate commercial and legal manner. It has far too many protections built around it.
