An internet friend, Vicky (ty for the story), put up a story that confused the hell out of me. I would direct you to the story, but there are updates and stuff, so I will just sum it up here. A fire chief (who is an American of African descent) in a small town has ordered all stick on American flags be removed from the lockers in the fire station, claiming they were put there with RACIST intent. The American flag is a symbol of racism. Why? Well, it seems that one of those American flags was placed on a locker that also had a picture of a chimpanzee smoking a cigarette, which the chief claims was blatantly racist (the individuals involved with the photograph state that it was a joke between two firemen about SMOKING and nothing else... the picture was taken down before this whole flag thing hit the fan). So, to stop this demonstration of racist ideology, the chief ordered ALL stickers removed, including the Marine sticker of one fireman who was a retired Marine, and was using the same locker as his father, a man who served in Vietnam. The chief also put 4 firemen on suspension (including the marine) because they would not remove their stickers and were, obviously, racist. Here comes the fun part. The 4 suspended were an African American (the Marine), a European American (white guy), and two Cuban Americans -- a very diverse group of individuals. Well, since then, the chief has replaced all the stickers and then some and brought the 4 men suspended back to duty. The former Marine, who is also the head of the fire workers union, and a NUMBER of other fire workers are arguing that the chief be removed from his position because he has over played his need for power. I, personally, think the chief should be demoted to the lowest possible position in the department, basically the position of a first week rookie. I am sorry. Racism does still exist in this world. BUT COME ON!!! That chief is BEYOND over reaching. I have ranted and raved long enough. I shall now step down from my soap box and let you get on with your normal lives.
