An old Canadian made Lys guitar is in the shop for a reset, which is usually a routine operation, but this guitar is built a little differently. On just about every dovetail jointed acoustic guitar since 1950, the dovetail joint can be accessed by drilling a hole under the 15th fret, or the 13th fret in the case if a 12 fret guitar. This Lys has that access right in between frets 14 and 15, and there is no gap between the face of the dovetail and the mortise, only the rout for the truss rod allows access. I started the operation like I usually do. I drilled under the 15th to find that gap, but all was hitting was the mahogany from the mortise. Instead of just drilling blindly in every direction, I decided to remove the tongue of the fingerboard entirely. You can see where my drill bit was hitting in the first picture. With the dovetail exposed, I was able to steam the neck off. On with the reset.
