An old rabbi once asked his students how to tell when the long night is over and the new day has begun. One student suggested: Is it when you can see through the shadows at fifty yards and tell the difference between a dog and a sheep? No, replied the rabbi. Another ventured: Is it when you can tell at a great distance the difference between a fig tree and a peach tree? The rabbi shook his head in disagreement. Finally, the students said: If you are so wise, you tell us. The rabbi paused for a moment and then said: It is when you can look on the face of any woman or man and see a sister, a brother. If you cannot do that, then no matter what time it is, it is still night.
