An oldie I just found but wow, well worth watching. In it, Vi Hart uses 12-tone music to discuss structure and creativity. How do you break out of received creative structures (literary tropes, musical patterns like the ABA 6/8 jig, etc.) in order to force the mind to think a genuinely new thing, and then how do you use received structure as scaffolding for what you bring back from that experience? It strikes me that the same principles could be (and are in the video, if obliquely) applied to belief structures. Do we believe what we believe because weve adopted a received structure (like Catholicism or Buddhism) and our brains like patterns, or are we reaching outside that structure to discover what is numinous outside the pattern? And if we are, do we recognize that its totally okay to bring that experience back and hang it on whatever scaffolding we already have? I think there might be a blog entry in this. I also think I need a good book on Chaos Theory.
