An open letter to my daughter for her choir retreat / 16th birthday: My Sweet Girl: Remember when I asked you and your brother to write me sweet notes for Mothers’ Day? You did and he didn’t (Surprise! Surprise!). Well, now, I have been asked to write a sweet note to you. Piece of cake, right? After all, I have TONS of sweet things to say about you. • Like how patient you are with people of all ages – the young and the not-so-young – including ME! • Like the day when things changed in our family and you went to your school counselor to pray for me. • Like the times you give me great massages even though I can’t return the favor for you. I try! • Like all of the encouragement you have given me with my business. • Like the time we were all playing putt-putt and your brother had a melt-down because he scored an 8 on a hole. When it was your turn, you INTENTIONALLY scored a 9 to help him feel better. • Like how you are willing to let others shine even when you would shine brighter. You make so many sacrifices for so many people. You have such a big heart. As your preschool teacher told me, “The qualities that you can’t teach a child, LEAH HAS IN SPADES.” We have been through a lot in the past several years; our lives have changed drastically from the way things used to be. You have experienced things that break my heart. But you have shown your strength and integrity and commitment to right from wrong. It makes me happy to know that you are so confident in yourself and you do not feel the need to “go along with the crowd” to be accepted. People often tell me that I should be “so proud” of you. But I can’t take pride in you because that would be taking credit for the person you are. I’m not worthy to take this credit; I am only grateful that I get to be your mother and share part of your life with you. I am so excited for the opportunity that you have to be part of the Madrigals. I know this was a goal you had for a long time. And even though Mr. Weaver can be pretty blunt (UNDERSTATEMENT!!!!), keep that thick skin of yours and heed every word, instruction and (hopefully) encouragement that he gives you. Like a father, he only wants what is best for you and for the group. You may not always agree with the method, but you will enjoy the end result. This experience will change your life. Just like so many life experiences, the Madrigals won’t be easy and it won’t always be fun but it will always be worth it. The lessons you will learn from the Madrigals will be more than just music, pitch, and a few foreign words. This will be one of the hardest things you have ever done, but it will also be one of the most rewarding. Savor every minute. And when you get home from this weekend, we will celebrate your 16th birthday. Last year, you were in the Bahamas for your birthday; this year, you are at a camp in Hardinsburg. I have a feeling that you will enjoy the events of this birthday even more than the previous one. I love you with all my heart. Mommy
