An open letter to residents of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Atlanta, - TopicsExpress

An open letter to residents of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Atlanta, and other points north: Thank you for spending a lifetime coming to Baldwin County to vacation. We enjoy your visits (at least the ones that can drive) and appreciate the fact you realize what a great thing we have going down here. Please, by all means keep coming to visit and spending your money with our merchants, but please, please, PLEASE stop moving down here. You are sucking the identity out of our beautiful county. Youve turned what were once our quaint little communities with huge character into just another big box wasteland full of four lane highways and traffic jams. The only people who are glad to see your permanence are the real estate people and the construction people whove both been fattened by your presence. The rest of us miss our two lane roads and being able to go out in public and know most of the people we see. We miss going out to the locally owned eateries and being able to have a conversation with the adjoining table about little Billys great Little League game, or the wedding we both attended last week. We miss going to bed at night with our doors unlocked and feeling safe or not worrying to a point of panic while our kids play somewhere other than in our sight. We miss going for a walk along the water without one of you newcomers trying to tell us to get off your beach. You see, you are forcing us to become more like you rather than you becoming one of us, and when that happens its not a good thing for either of us. Dont get me wrong. Please come visit and stay a week, maybe even two. Its good for the entire state as Baldwin County generates something like 60% of the states income, much of that through tourist dollars. We love seeing you come down, just not when youre behind the wheel of a u-haul.
