An orphanage contact in Ukraine sent the following update -- The entire country is practically bankrupt as a result of the war going on in Eastern Ukraine. There is no money for anything. Orphanages have been underfunded before but this year things are as bad as they were in early 90s when the USSR fell apart and the funding stopped completely. Local authorities have told orphanage directors that IF there will be any funding available it will be directed only to cover the cost of utilities (electricity, heating etc) and food for the children. Salaries will be paid but with delays, and we will have to cut personnel and let people go on unpaid leaves whenever possible. Food expenses will also have to be cut, so the children will not be getting much. Other needs of the children - such as medication, school supplies, clothes, shoes, toilet paper, sanitary supplies, cleaning supplies etc - will be left to the orphanage to take care of via donations. We will have to look for sponsors to cover those costs.
