An overwhelming majority of the newly elected Bar Council are in favour of the re-introduction of the rank of Queens Counsel. Representing the states barristers, this indicates a dissatisfaction with the former Bar Councils wish to keep the clearly unsatisfactory rank of Senior Counsel. This was introduced by the Fahey Liberal government, without consultation or a mandate, and in anticipation of a republic. This was followed by Labor governments in other states and finally by the Commonwealth. With the collapse of support for a politicians republic, the fact that the Senior Counsel rank has disadvantages internationally and with clients, and a preference for tried and tested traditions among the bar, it has been reversed in New Zealand, at the Commonwealth level and in Queensland and Victoria. Its days are clearly limited in NSW The change, incidentally, was triggered by the young Queensland Attorney Jarrod Pieter Bleijie who deserves much credit for this. . smh.au/nsw/sydney-barristers-battle-over-reintroduction-of-queens-counsel-title-20141112-11l81u.html
