An update from the Ranger in Charge today: .. The Ranger rang me today - heres a quick summary of what we discussed: .. He said that he has a hard copy of the Management Guidelines that we can have. I said Id drop past on Saturday morning to pick it up. I asked about a soft copy and he said management prefers them to go out in print. .. Hes got someone looking into our proposed signage (letting Park users know about PGMTB and how to contact us, with a Parks Victoria logo and some notes on responsible trail use), and he expects to have something ready late next week. Its with the marketing person, who does all that stuff. He said that the wording may end up being changed but hes specifically asked that the message doesnt get watered down. .. He likes the idea of a guest book, placed at strategic points around the park, which we can determine. He said hed get one of the local Rangers to look into that for us but he doesnt foresee any problems with my suggestion of a plastic box mounted on a star picket, containing the guest book. He suggested we could include some contact details and Club material in with these as well. I mentioned the survey being done by Whittlesea Council - he was unaware of it and also interested to hear what they plan to do with the information - I said Id be trying to get hold of the results as well, as we want to work with the Council for funding and grants, possibly publicity as well. .. I talked about the proposed media release. He said that would have to go through their legal people for consideration - any press release would basically need to have their stamp of approval - but he likes the idea of getting a couple of Rangers together with some Club members in our new jerseys (and possibly Council officers, if theyre getting on board as well), and getting some pics in the local papers, or on TV if that might be viable. .. With regard to the trail assessments, he said that they are getting stuck into it, but each km of trail is taking them about a day, but theyre getting through it slowly. I asked if we could help with people on the ground, and he said they have to do most of it through the weekdays, as their weekend work is pretty solid elsewhere in the Park. When I asked if we could involve people who have experience in this area, he seemed a bit reluctant, but said that its unlikely that trails are going to be closed - theyre just looking into decisions on whether armouring or re-routing might be needed, bit by bit. I think well have our work cut out in getting really involved with the assessment process, to be honest - but on the positive side, we are still riding there and nothing has been closed yet!
