Analytical Chemistry Techniques Researchers have recently evaluated the use of thin-film solid-phase microextraction (SPME) as the sampling preparation step before direct analysis in real time (DART) to quantify cocaine and methadone in direct immersion mode from urine samples. DART is susceptible to a matrix effect when complex samples are analyzed, impacting the sensitivity, accuracy, or precision, and can result in the contamination of the mass spectrometer. The researchers find that using thin-film SPME improves the detectability of the compounds and provides efficient sample cleanup though avoiding contamination of the ion source by salt residues from urine. The technique has a relatively short analysis time through combining a 96 well shaker and the dart technique with an extraction time of 10 minutes. Read more: goo.gl/L7hqLf
