Ancient Wreck Reveals More Treasures About 2 000 years ago a massive Roman ship sank off the coast of the island of Antikythera in the Aegean Sea. Since sponge divers discovered it in 1900, the ancient shipwreck - located 45m below the surface - has given up all manner of treasures, including bronze and marble statues and the so-called Antikythera Mechanism, a strange clocklike device brought up in 1901 that some call the world’s oldest computer. Now, an international team of divers and archaeologists, using a cutting-edge metal suit known as the Exosuit, have discovered that the wreck is much bigger and even more impressive than anyone realized. The evidence shows this is the largest ancient shipwreck ever discovered, said Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute’s Brendan Foley who added that his team has brought up several new artefacts including tableware and an enormous bronze spear (pic 8) believed to have been part of a giant statue. According to Foley, these finds indicate that much of the ship’s cargo – rumoured to be treasure - is still preserved beneath the sediment. huffingtonpost/2014/10/10/antikythera-shipwreck-treasure_n_5961552.html?&ir=Green&ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000048
