“And He did not work any miracles there because of their lack of faith,” Matthew 13:58 I feel like an old time preacher using a particular text as a springboard for a few thoughts. Today’s Gospel scene as related in Matthew 13:54-58 is one of the saddest passages. Jesus returns to His home and they totally don’t get what He is all about as He works to establish the Kingdom of God. While they are astonished at His wisdom, they reject Him. They lack faith. Before I rush to condemn these natives of Nazareth, it behooves me and you to look at what many of us do as He visits our “neighborhood.” I love the teachings of Jesus but I also love the teachings of many others. I even may be astonished at His words but do I have faith in Him? Do you think there are many of our friends who even say they believe, but do they? Do I believe in Jesus and His person? Do I accept Him as my Lord and Savior? I heard a young person say of another, “He does everything by the book but really does nothing by The Book.” He went on to say, “I look for loving mercy and he never shows it.” Each day we have to pray that someone will not think that of us. What a tragic way for someone to lose his/her faith but who put on a great external show. How do we avoid this? Any ideas? -- Msgr. John Barry
