And, as promised.... The Idlestone EP: Behind the Music Post #1: Epiphany Preface: It has been a week or so since the release of our first demo, The Idlestone EP! We thought it might be a fine idea to share with you a little bit about how these songs came to be. Most importantly, our lyrics are all scriptural, so we wanted to share God’s Word with you, which is the inspiration for everything we wrote for this demo. And so, we begin with the song Epiphany! In September of 2012, Kevin and I began rehearsing with the drummer and the guitarist for an ambient rock band called State of Isaac. At first, it was just a chance for us to play around with a song I had written and sent to some friends, but it went from rehearsing one song to working on several, and we began to meet up once a month to continue rehearsing and writing our songs with these talented friends of ours. (Kevin drives in from Decatur, IL, and I travel from Grand Rapids, MI. We rehearse in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. It is certainly a labor of love and a lot of dollars spent on gas, but it’s worth it!) Our third rehearsal took place in November, and at this time, Kevin had been working on a new tune. He had the beginnings written, and he shared it with me that weekend. We decided it was something worth finishing and pursuing further, so we recorded it in my parents’ family room that weekend, just Kevin on the guitar. The rest of the song kind of just came to him as we recorded it, and after he traveled back home to Decatur, he spent some time tweaking in a guitar solo and adding an extra chorus to the end. He sent it to me, and I waited. That month, at a Lectio Divina (my Catholic Bible study group), I had been blessed with a revelation while meditating on Philippians 2:1-11. In his letter, the apostle Paul writes: Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. As a believer, I had always known this on a logical, cerebral level; yes, in order to die for me on the cross, Christ first has to be born. But the meditation on this verse that night became the gateway to a personally divine epiphany- at that moment, my heart became aware that Christ did not just give up his human life for us; his first sacrifice was that of his divine realm. He first gave up heaven to be born into this world and actually, physically be with us. I began to consider my life not only in terms of His death, but also in terms of His incredible initial sacrifice- that He would care enough for us to leave His place on high and live with us is truly unimaginable. And so, changed by a new revelation in a fresh Word from the Lord, I let this knowledge stew in my mind for a bit. I listened to Kevin’s recording over and over, asking the Lord to reveal the melody to me. It came on a cold afternoon in December as I drove home from school. Several weeks later, just after the New Year, the Lord revealed the lyrics to me, and at the end of January, we began rehearsing it with Jon and Lance. Even as I write this, I can’t believe how recently this has come to pass; this song is so dear to me, that it feels like it’s been longer! We hope this song speaks the Lord’s precious word to you too. I praise God for this revelation, and I pray that it draws you nearer to Him as it has to me. We welcome your questions and comments, and please listen to Epiphany. Keep His word in your minds and guard it in your hearts! (Philippians 2:1-11) Blessings, ~Erin reverbnation/idlestone/song/18285484-epiphany
