And by chance on the day of the Referendum - welcome to our 1000th member Amanda ! I started this group back in 2005 with about 20 people primarily since I was a few years in the country and feeling a wee bitty homesick! I thought (pre-Facebook) that a website with a few posted events might be a nice way to meet fellow Scots and swap such important trivialities as secret Irn Bru and square sausage shop locations! ;) The last few months before the Referendum have been … challenging in trying my best to moderate what I naively didn’t expect in a primarily social group - some spirited political discussion as is the norm in a healthy democracy! I hope I’ve been fair to both sides and I hope that - as I expressed during the last few weeks - that we can move on now onto more social issues! Remember that what all of us Scots share is that we are passionate about our homeland and people and of course will continue to be so after today. I can speak from diaspora experience of being a Scot abroad for nigh on 20 years - still today whenever I hear a Scottish accent in a bar I do generally say hiya! There’s a sense of compatriotism and shared values that makes Scotland just that wee bit closer for all of us when you’re awfy far away and that’s to do with the people not the politics. So let’s put a line under today with some mutual respect for each others rights to different views and opinions. I look forward to you all arranging more social events across Australia, sharing crucial Scottish info and wee gems - what this site is all about! Slàinte! Al
