And lest people think Im anti-police, Im not. I have friends who are now or have been police officers, wonderful people, the kind who protect and serve, the kind who go the extra mile for people who are poor or in trouble, the kind who dont see themselves as superior to anyone because of the color of their skin or their gender or their power. Id like to think that my police officer friends are in the majority out there in this country. The bad thing about these out-of-control racist cops who kill because they can is that all those good police officers get tarred with the same brush. And the system usually puts pressure on them to be like the bad guys, but they resist. Its time we gave all the good cops out there some help and reformed the system to get rid of the bad ones and to remove any pressure to misbehave (such as stop and frisk, etc.) But excusing this kind of needless killing of unarmed civilians because we have to support the police isnt supporting the real police officers who take their oaths of duty seriously. It isnt making this messed-up system any better for them to try to do their jobs the right way. If you want to support the police, reform the system, so the bad guys dont get covered up but thrown out, and the good guys get the support they need to be even better.
