And now, a post on Musical Qigong: How important is it to listen to good music? Your favorite jams on your iPod have a definite affect on you...we instinctively know that music has a powerful influence on our mental and emotional states. Have you ever considered the influence of music on your physical body? What music do you listen to that makes you feel positive, vibrant, and healthy? The human body has physiological rhythms that are influenced by vibrational frequencies of sound waves. Music affects the flow of our energy body, which in turn, affects our physical body. Ancient healers in China understood this and music was used as medicine, perhaps even before acupuncture. Even the character used for medicine in Chinese incorporates the symbol for music. They noticed the relationship between the five elements and musical tones and how certain sounds influenced different organs systems in the body and their corresponding functions. For example, the sound of the Gong, which belongs to the earth element, promotes the function of the Spleen, which governs cognitive thinking and ideas. It has a sound that is loud, downward, and cloudy, promoting healthy digestion and transformation of food to energy to be used by the body. The sound of Zhi belongs to the fire element and influences the Heart, and has a sound that is strong, active, and lively, promoting the vessels and healthy metabolic functions. The Jue note belongs to the wood element and relates to the Liver and Gall Bladder, with a sound that is smooth, soft, and free flowing, thus smoothing and regulating the flow of Qi and Blood...and so forth. Lately, for a general mental, emotional and physical tune-up, I have been tuning into my Music for Meditation station on Pandora station, which I normally listen to only when I am sitting or doing qigong. Strategically, I have been tuning in and tuning up whenever I am stuck in traffic, which Honolulu apparently has of the countrys worst. I end up feeling pretty blissed out and high all the way home, and my heart rate is slower and my body is noticeably less tense. Music and healing go hand in hand. The field of Musical qigong, or the use of music and qigong to harmonize and bring balance to the body, has a long history in China. Check out this sampling of music form China, and try and take note of the subtle changes in your body...and make sure you fill your day with a variety of awesome healing tunes!! youtube/watch?v=xDKhG9Pzx14&feature=share&list=PLAC700B9145149942
