And now an encouraging word from Pastor Bill! (Due to the up coming Holiday, this will be the last devotion for the next few days) In Colossians 3:13 the Apostle Paul says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” In the family of God there is great comfort in knowing that forgiveness is offered for every offence. In forgiveness we find true rest and ultimate healing and Paul makes it pretty clear that there is an overarching emotion that follows the comfort of forgiveness. In verse 14 he says, “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” If you read yesterday’s devotion, then you remember that the deeper meaning of “put on” is “to sink into”. If we are to sink into the character traits of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, then love is the character trait that covers us all up under one cozy blanket. I remember when I was a kid; we would often have big sleep overs with a bunch of cousins at our grandparent’s house. When it was time for all of us to go to sleep, we would all pile onto the biggest antique bed I have ever seen. I remember my grandma pulling out the largest quilt that I’m sure has ever been made ever made! It was so heavy and so big that it covered the bed all the way to the floor on all three sides with just barely enough space for our little heads to pop out at the top. With a blanket that big, there was never any reason for any of us cousins to fight each other in order to stay covered up all through the night. In a similar way, love is the warm, thick, firm and yet soft down comforter that fully covers the family of God. This week, as we all prepare to eat way too much food, let’s pause for just a moment and thank God for the His Family, the comforting, supportive and loving unified body of God. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
