And pretty soon, there will be a public water service trying to be a private for profit company. Thats nice.~Paul Flynn Thats exactly it. Its the RTE model that Irish Water will follow. Think about it.. You pay an enforced licence fee per household (water charge) and you can either watch their produce or not (use water or not) but you still get taxed because you own a TV (have a connection to the mains). Now RTE are also allowed to commercialise their operations by generating advertising revenue which is outside of the licence tax (Irish Water can also allow outside third party investment on top of the water charges they collect) and thus earn a profit margin that can be used as they see fit. Usually by contracting third party programming providers to provide any home grown programming they cannot do themselves, which is practically all of it (Irish Water contracts Third party companies like Veolia to provide services that they should be doing themselves) and the resulting excess returns are divided out. Usually to pay massive salaries to their staff in the form of bonuses (and dividends to their third party investors as in the case of Irish Water) while we are forced, under threat of legal action, to pay for their privilege. It seems like the only difference between the two is that RTE will never be sold off because its too irresistible for any Government to keep under its control and the public are not wise to the scam. Irish Water? It doesnt really matter if its sold off or not. What matters is that by charging for water, by commercialising the water, they created the market to allow other providers in to profit from your water. Its insane but its the Irish way... ~belenus.
