And so I end this look back at 1984 as I started it, with an album titled for the year. But in this case, its the Eurythmics soundtrack to the film 1984. I didnt see the movie when it came out, and I wasnt the only one. Maybe the mood of the country was different than what George Orwell predicted; we had just elected Ronald Reagen for a second term under the slogan that it was, ... morning in America. People werent interested in a vision of the future from four decades past that depicted Western society as a totalitarian state. Or maybe its just that the novel was too beloved by people to succeed in any adaptation. Audience ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are both at 72%. Its notable for being Richard Burtons last film, but often a final film is not the best. Still, I love John Hurt. Maybe someday itll show up on cable. https://youtube/watch?v=IcTP7YWPayU One thing I never knew about the soundtrack is that the Eurythimcs were not the choice of the director to score the film. The director, Michael Radford, originally hired Dominic Muldowney to score the film, but the studio wanted a pop group for greater market potential. Radford retaliated by pulling the film from consideration for a BAFTA. When he did publicly denounce the switch in an acceptance speech for the Evening Standards best picture award, the group released a statement that they wouldnt have agreed to do the music had they known the director did not approve. More details about the story can be found here, including versions of the film that have included the original score: imdb/title/tt0087803/trivia
