And, so, for Day 4 (Already, Sue Tyrkus?! This is going fast) of my positivity challenge. I had a bunch of things last evening, but I have forgotten them. My friend Fiona Farrell said it perfectly when she said that all the things for which she has to be grateful do not appear in order, but come rushing all at once to the fore, jostling to make it into the list. 1. I am grateful that my country of residence and second nationality, France, cares enough about contemplative time spent in la silva, the old Roman term for the forest, in the saddle or on foot, that they have continued to care for the regional and estate forests, criss-crossed with bridle and footpaths, dating back as far as to the time of the Merovingians, so that we may continue to use them today, a long line of equestrians and their horses nodding good-day to those on foot. For the record, since the times of the Napoleonic campaigns, Frances reforestation efforts have resulted in an increase in the total surface of the country dedicated to forest, more than 16.3 million hectares, or 29.7% of France is wooded. 2. I am grateful to the farriers, who make sure that we continue to have horses. As you might or might not know, no foot, no horse. 3. I am grateful to the farmers, who continue to work the fertile land -- sitting as it is astride the 45th parallel -- devoted to our alimentary needs, or total of 53.2% of France, representing a half an hectare per person, and who help to preserve the rural aspect of this country. The rest is devoted to mountains for skiing and kilometers of beautiful shore along the coast, whether for walking, tanning, watching birds, or merely tying up your yacht. I nominate Lyca Benitez Brown and David Robert Lyle to take up the challenge to begin a 5 day positivity challenge. This entails acknowledging 3 things per day for which you are grateful with no negativity allowed (not that any of my friends are ever the least bit negative). Then, nominate two people per day to take up the challenge and spread the good vibe. Peace out.
