And speaking of documentaries... What do you make of this? vimeo/99114809 Joe Jacksons doc has been in the works for years. If you click the above link, the first sentence says, You dont have to be a fan of Michael Jacksons father, sometimes referred to as the most hated man in show business, to want to see this film. Well, thats a smart disclaimer because there are an awfully lot of people who dont have much use for Joe Jackson. My own feelings about him are very ambivalent. On the one hand, I respect him for the drive and ambition it took to get his family out of Gary, Indiana and to make a better life. He was the one who instilled in Michael the famous work ethic that drove him to be successful. On the other hand, there was a reason why this mans children feared him. One thing I do like about this film-if the previews are an indication-is that it doesnt appear to pull any punches, nor is it necessarily an attempt at a white wash. If you are a fan of the TV movie An American Dream you know that what was presented was a very humanizing portrayal of Joe, one that emphasized his strengths as a father as well as his warts as a man-and, boy, did those warts sting. But it was honest. So if you can appreciate Joe Jackson as he was portrayed in that film, you might find Making Michael at the very least, interesting. And, however you look at it, understanding the psyche behind the man who made Michael Jackson-both literally and figuratively-is essential for understanding Michael Jackson. Another interesting tidbit is that in one interview, Joe specifically mentions the same incident that Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard spoke of in their book Remember The Time. When I reviewed that book, I raised the question of the other side of that story. The bodyguards were doing what they had been ordered to do. Joe, so he claims, was a concerned father doing what he had to do. What was truly going on? People can say what they will about Joe, but he definitely pulls no punches about what he saw happening around his son in those last couple of years. Even Michael was known to have said, I wish my father was here-hed kick their asses. For those of us who DO want that truth, it may behoove us at least a little bit to hear this old man out before hes gone. There are times when Joe is full of BS, true; but he is definitely not a stupid man. And God knows he was not the perfect husband and father. But judging from the preview, I think this is an important documentary that fans interested in the truth will want to see, although I have a feeling that, as with all projects not sanctioned by the estate, it probably wont get very far. It will be a shame if that happens.
