And then there is the story of Frank and the Thanksgiving turkey. - TopicsExpress

And then there is the story of Frank and the Thanksgiving turkey. Oh. such a tale of woe. My stepbrother Allen and i decided back in the 70s to go turkey hunting over in Pocahontas County to bag one of the birds for the big day. I had just purchased a little bright blue compact of foreign origin and a hunting we did go...having gotten up real early to get to our destination over by Marlinton. We knew something was going to go wrong when we turned down this old logging road that soon became nothing more than a path. It was while parked trying to figure out our next move that a doe came up over the ravine onto the road ahead. The doe looked at the blue car ...we closed our mouths because we were just as surprised. The does white flag went up and off it went up the mountain being followed by 8 sisters hiding over in the ravine. Allen was the first to get his gun out and i being a bit more of a slug...lumbered out and being the idiots that we were attempted to run after a herd of deer uphill. We did not make it more than a couple hundred feet before falling down and rolling back down to the path. That was not the insult of the trip...the insult and the pure terror was getting back to the turkey hunt....finding a thicket with a big ol fallen tree and with turkey calls began our call to attract the birds. About halfway through this symphony, the hairs on the back of our necks stood up when we realized we were not in the best of places...for other hunters would be looking for turkeys in those thickets and some might just shoot without looking. Singing the first song that came to mind...Way down south in Dixie....we crawled out very carefully...scared and dejected...and ready to end this farce of a hunt. Still as we approach this beloved holiday...i am sure the rest of you have either hunting or turkey cooking stories to share...so, come on...lets hear them.
