“And they must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, - TopicsExpress

“And they must also be tested first; if they prove blameless, then they can serve as deacons” 1 Tim 3:10. I’ve noticed in deacon elections, at 3 different churches, that many will focus on certain qualifications that back the family member or friend they wish to support for deacon. The prerequisite of being “tested first” seems to be second to “husband of one wife.” However all qualifications are equality important. It is imperative for a nominee to already be involved in ministry, but just because they are currently meeting needs doesn’t mean one should over look the other Biblical requirements. The Greek word here means –let be proved. The Louw-Nida Lexicon gives the meaning, “to try to learn the genuineness of something by examination and testing, often through actual use—‘to test, to examine.’” Oh beloved, it’s important we don’t seek men on the bases of family or friends, but on the foundation of the Bible. If a man is not presently a good steward of a small ministry, then how can he be faithful over more? Jesus said in His parable of the talents, “Well done, good and faithful slave! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things” Matt 25:21b. This applies to all Christians who seek larger ministries without giving there all to the ministry at hand! May both deacons and all Christians strive to be “proved blameless” in our current area of service to our Lord.
