...And this is why you cant have nice things (and by nice things, politicians mean laws increasing bicycle and pedestrian safely.) Yesterday in Maryland, the chair of its House Environmental Matters Committee said, “I’m a little shell-shocked that there are so many bike bills ... This year it’s four feet, and next year it’s five feet, and before you know it the cars are on the shoulders and the bikes are on the road.” He added that many cyclists he observes “don’t pay any attention to the rules of the road.” washingtonpost/local/trafficandcommuting/bike-safety-advocates-push-2-bills-get-frosty-reception-in-maryland-general-assembly/2014/01/28/81fc1c3c-8861-11e3-a5bd-844629433ba3_story.html Meanwhile in Texas, a couple on a cross-country bike ride experienced our countrys inadequate safe passing laws and practices in the worst way. A woman was riding slightly to the left behind her husband when a man driving a pickup and pulling a horse trailer at 60 mph struck her left side. According to the Police Report, the pickup truck driver was distracted by his cell phone … he looked up and saw (the bicyclists) eastbound and swerved left.” The Police did not cite the driver for any legal violation. The bicyclist suffered a compound fracture of her upper arm, a crushed left elbow, broken left wrist, nine broken ribs, a punctured lung and a burst fracture of a vertebra in her neck. Four surgeries have helped to stabilize her neck and elbow. We need roads that are safe for everyone. Lets start with better laws.
