But probably the most startling mode of salutation is that of the Moors, who greet a stranger by dashing toward him at full speed, as if to unhorse him, and when near suddenly firing a pistol over his head. The Egyptian’s salutation may be very appropriate for that warm region, but would offend ears polite in our own land.
