Andhra Pradesh junior doctors call off strike HYDERABAD/VISAKHAPATNAM: A day after the AP high court warned that thousands of junior doctors across the state might face criminal charges for staying away from work in government hospitals, the protesters called off their strike, saying they would now take legal recourse. For close to three weeks, about 5,000 junior doctors across the state have not reported for duty after they refused to sign a bond, which requires them to work in rural areas for one year. Medicos are also against a government order which allows private medical colleges to collect extra fees from students in order to pay their stipend for the next year. As the strike went on, medical services were crippled and the government moved in doctors from non-clinical departments, but emergency services along with night services and out-patient departments were severely hit and many patients were turned away. After several rounds of talks failed to cut ice, a division bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice K C Bhanu, directed the Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) to immediately report for duty on Saturday, promising to hear their grievances in due course.
