The concept of animal companions as “pets” is a fairly new invention; for most of human history animals were means to an end: farm animals provided milk, and meat, dogs guarded the livestock, and horses were “beasts of burden” used to pull plows or for transport. No more sympathy was felt for a horse, usually, than one would for a tractor today. But some felt differently, including the man who would found a whole organization promoting compassion for animals. On this day, April 10, 1866, Henry Bergh, son of a wealthy shipbuilder and one of the first animal activists in the United States, was granted a charter for the American Society for the Prevention Cruelty to Animals was passed. Bergh was shocked into action when he still served as a diplomat in Russia. Traveling near St. Petersburg, he witnessed a peasant mercilessly whipping a horse that was obviously incapable of moving. Appalled, Bergh approached the peasant and berated the man for his behavior. He realized then that similar acts of abuse happened daily all over the world, and after a brief stop to consult with the British Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, traveled to New York to start his own.
