Andreas sermon this morning was an example of praeteritio (saying youre not going to talk about something and then talking about it.) She didnt like history but then gave us a good history lesson about how the Israelites had to take the first step into the Jordan before God could act to help them gain access to the promised land. The sermon idea of feeling lost in the wilderness and how to get out of it reminded me of one of a favorite passage from Thomas Carlyles Sartor Resartus: Doubt of any sort cannot be removed except by Action. On which ground, too, let him who gropes painfully in darkness or uncertain light, and prays vehemently that the dawn may ripen into day, lay this other precept well to heart, which to me was of invaluable service: Do the Duty which lies nearest thee! which thou knowest to be a Duty! Thy second Duty will already have become clearer.
