Animal services subcommittee holds second meeting to discuss ordinance revisions Twelve members were present at the meeting, which centered on public safety, tethering and carrying dogs in the back of trucks. “In the news, we read where folks are hurt or killed by animals,” said District 4 Commissioner Sammie L. Sias, the chairman of the subcommittee. “Recently in Richmond County, we had a kid get ran over because he was running from a dog. Some folks are deathly afraid of animals – and it’s not always the dog’s fault – but we need to find ways to protect our citizens.” Committee members began by debating options to ensure public safety – including the idea of requiring owners of certain dog breeds to have a six-foot fence at their residence. “Based on my experience, every fence needs to be six-foot tall, no matter what kind of dog it is,” said Edward Jefferson, field operations manager of Augusta Animal Services Enforcement. “… Also, the fence needs to be dig-proof with either concrete or a chain-length cord in the ground.” Committee member Taylor Bry­ant questioned the idea of dog owners being required to have a fence. “It sounds like a ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ thing, but it doesn’t seem realistic,” Bryant said.
