Animation fans--I know youre out there-- should be sure to see Song of the Sea, the new animated feature by the Irish team that created The Secret of Kells a few years ago. The story of a brother who initially resents his strangely mute sister but who becomes her most fierce protector is sweet and moving, something that always impresses me when its just pictures on a screen, sound effects, and voice acting. This is a great feature for kids, without characters that arent too scary. In fact, it reminded me very much of the work of Miyasaki, in the sense that the story is character-driven, doesnt rely on manic action set pieces or snarky pop culture references, and the bad guy characters have deep-rooted motivations that make us reassess them. Its easy to see why its up for a Best Animated Feature Academy Award. Its go my vote. But most of all, the animation and artwork is drop-dead gorgeous, uniquely stylized and so beautiful I found myself tearing up just a minute or two into it.
